8 Tips to Help Improve Your Parenting Skills

Being a parent is a challenge and it is certainly problematic raising and looking after children and their needs. However, it is possible to nurture responsible children. Following some or all of the ideas I have listed below should make child rearing easier:

1. If you have a baby that is finding it difficult to get to sleep then try comforting him or her by including an item of mother's clothing in the bed. The article of clothing will have mother's smell on it and it might just help your baby to relax and go to sleep.

2. An important tip to consider in terms of parenting is to make sure that if you make a promise that you keep it. It does not matter whether a reward or a punishment is involved, consistency is the key to your child's learning and understanding as well as your credibility.

3. Give your child advance warning when instructing him or her to change activities. By giving your child a few minutes notice, "In five minutes it will be supper time", you allow your child to prepare for the new activity, and this leads to less fuss when he or she must stop playing.

4. Give serious consideration to using cloth diapers. There is a very large range of designs and styles to choose from and as well as costing much less that disposable diapers they are much more environmentally friendly. You are bound to find that within only a couple of months the cloth diapers will have paid for themselves. In addition it is likely that they will be softer on your baby's skin.

5. If you have several children, you and your spouse or partner should each plan one on one time with each child individually. Your time together might include activities such as shopping for ice cream or treats or just being with you on a shopping trip. You are bound to think of other activities your child will enjoy and appreciate. Your children will really enjoy your individual attention as well as being able to talk to you without being interrupted by their brother or sister.

6. Understand your tween! As a child approaches their teenage years, you will probably notice a significant change in their behavior and attitude. You are not alone - most parents go through this! Don't take it personally and try to remember that it's mostly an over-reaction. Allow your tween time to calm down before talking, and always stay calm.

7. When possible, make time to volunteer at your child's school. This is a good way for you to see how your child is doing in school. In addition, you will be offering valuable service in helping out the school with activities. Schools are often understaffed, so parental involvement contributes a lot to a school's success.

8. Use your smart phone as a baby monitor. If you are visiting someone's home or you are on vacation and do not have your monitor, you can download an application that will let your phone function as a monitor. If the baby makes a noise, your phone will call a number that you put into the application.

So, are you ready for the challenge? Of course you are. Apply the above practical suggestions to your individual child. And then eventually your hard work will be rewarded when your child reaches adulthood and is a delightful, responsible person.
